How are foster families selected when studying in the United States?

Choosing to study in the United States is an exciting decision, but it can also raise some questions. One of the most frequent questions is how to select the foster family that will welcome you in your new home. At MAE Sports & Education, we understand the importance of this aspect and that is why we want to explain in detail how we carry out this process.

And the fact is that, the host family in the United States plays a fundamental role in your student experience there. They are your second home, your support and your guides during your stay.

The process of selecting a foster family

Requirements to become a foster family

  • In-depth interview: interested families must undergo a detailed interview to assess their motivations, lifestyle, availability and ability to provide a safe and welcoming home.
  • Background check: a comprehensive criminal background check is conducted on all adult family members (also called host family).
  • Home visit: a visit is made to the family’s home to assess living conditions and ensure that they meet safety and comfort standards.
  • References: References from people who know the family are requested to corroborate the information provided.

Student and family compatibility

A form is usually sent to students to find out their interests and align them with the best possible family.

  • Interests and hobbies: the host family and the student share interests or hobbies to facilitate integration and foster a closer relationship.
  • Expectations: the expectations of both parties are clarified to avoid misunderstandings and ensure a positive experience.

Training and ongoing support

  • Orientation: host families receive training on cultural differences and how to support the student in their adaptation.
  • Support: Throughout the student’s stay, families have the support of a local coordinator who will resolve any questions or problems that may arise.

What aspects do we value in a host family?

From each school, they look for families who are welcoming and willing to share their lives with a foreign student. Families must be committed to providing a safe home and family environment for the student.

These families are usually parents of students or parents of former students as well as the school’s own teachers.

Finally, these host families, to be ideal, should be those who are interested in learning about other cultures and sharing their own culture with the student.

Families in the F1 program in the United States are selected under the same criteria as those in the J1 program. In this case, host families receive a stipend to cover the student’s basic expenses, such as food, electricity or gas, among others.

When it comes to assigning these families, local coordinators work to find the right host family. that best suits the student’s profile. To this end, aspects such as hobbies, medical conditions and other personal characteristics are considered, with the objective of guaranteeing an enriching and positive coexistence.
